Check Out This Video On The History Of Unix!

    Last updated 3 years ago

Unix is the predecessor of some of the most widely-used enterprise operating systems. It is the basis for AIX and Solaris, and the Unix POSIX standards and kernel structure are utilized by Linux and OS X. When a piece of software has such a large influence on the day-to-day life of so many people and is the core operation of a company’s information infrastructure, it is important to understand its origins and functionality.

This video gives a brief overview of the history of Unix, including insight into its underlying architecture. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, two of the original developers of Unix at Bell Labs, explain the origins of the Unix operating system and their thoughts on the system in general.

An administrator for Unix-based systems should find this bit of history valuable. Ideally, they’ll also recognize the importance of bare-metal backups for their systems. Storix’s Adaptable System Recovery solution will help restore backups in a disaster-recovery situation. To learn more, visit us on our website or call us at (619) 543-0200.

The Reports of UNIX's Death Are Greatly Exaggerated.

    Last updated 3 years ago

"There has been a lot of ill-considered press coverage about the “death” of UNIX and coverage of the wholesale migration of UNIX workloads to LINUX, some of which (the latter, not the former) I have contributed to. But to set the record straight, the extinction of UNIX is not going to happen in our lifetime."

To read more about this UNIX topic, check out this very interesting article, by Richard Fichera.

Together, We Can Make a Difference In the Lives Of Those With Cystic Fibrosis

    Last updated 3 years ago

Storix is a proud supporter of Aptalis CF Cycle For Life, a premier cycling event, on October 29th, that will be benefiting research towards a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. (CF) Storix’s  involvement with CF Cycle For Life and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation stems from  our very own Director of Sales and Marketing, Manuel Altamirano. “I got involved with the San Diego Cystic Fibrosis Foundation  2-years ago to help launch its inaugural event in 2010. Since then, we have successfully doubled the number of participants and supporters,” says Manuel Altamirano. “It goes without saying,  fundraising has gone through the roof!”

Manuel’s journey with Cystic Fibrosis derives from his 10-year old nephew, Daniel Villarreal. Since Daniel’s early diagnosis, he has had over 20 hospital admissions. In 2010, Daniel was admitted 4 times, spending over 43-days at Rady Children’s Hospital.  Daniel is a courageous kid with dreams of going to college and becoming successful.

Cystic fibrosis is a devastating genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. More than ten million Americans are symptomless carriers of the defective CF gene. Advances continue to be made in finding a cure, but like all charities, requires supporters.
